The mood in the change rooms following our round one win over Carlton was 'sombre' according to head coach Steve Symonds, after Bri Davey went down with a knee injury late in the fourth term.

"There's mixed emotions for everyone," Symonds said in his post-match presser.

"We've had a round one win and started the season on a positive note but our playing group has a really close connection so the mood was really sombre.

"The girls will go away, catch their breath and get around Bri - we have our fingers crossed for her."

Davey will undergo scans today to determine the extent of the injury.

Symonds said he was impressed with a number of young players who have stepped up to play important roles across the midfield and forward line.

"We have been trying for a couple of years to build a squad that's really even across the board," he said.

"We've put in a lot of work with our younger players and we are starting to see them develop and take the load off.

"Tarni Brown has taken some big strides and Mikala Cann had a super pre-season - she's growing as a mid as well.

"Ebony O'Dea played back today, we explored that."

Ruby Schleicher was among our best, notching up 15 disposals, 8 marks and a goal while keeping Darcy Vescio goalless.

"Rubes is fantastic, she's just grown in confidence since last year," Symonds said.

"We had her on Darcy last year and she was able to find the balance of winning the defensive battle and being offensive off that.

"We think she's going to have another solid season - she's stepped up and set the tone."

Symonds said his side looked stronger in the second half.

"We only had one trial game before Christmas and after the New Year break we were straight into round one," he said.

"Everyone was a little bit scratchy and we overdid the handball a lot.

"We ran out the game quite well, so we're quite happy fitness wise.

"Hopefully we can get in our groove week after week and start stringing it all together."
