> Dayne Beams fronts the media after training to discuss his contract extension

The Collingwood Football Club is delighted to announce that emerging midfielder Dayne Beams has signed a two-year contract extension which will see him at the club until 2012.

19-year-old Beams, who was born in Yarrawonga in Victoria and grew up on the Gold Coast, was selected by Collingwood with the club’s 2nd pick (No. 29 overall) in the 2008 AFL Draft from AFLQ club Southport, and has enjoyed an outstanding first season with the Magpies.

He debuted in the round two victory over Melbourne, and has played 14 matches in 2009, averaging 18 disposals, three tackles and one goal per game playing through the midfield and across half forward.

Beams won the AFL Rising Star nomination for round 17, and had a career-high 30 possessions in last Saturday’s 93-point victory over Richmond at the MCG.

Beams’ commitment happens in a year in which Collingwood has been able to secure the immediate playing futures of some of its most important players, with Nick Maxwell, Leon Davis, Scott Pendlebury, Dane Swan, Heath Shaw and Dale Thomas all signing new contracts.
