REINVENTED Collingwood veteran Leon Davis says he's enjoying the challenge of taking on some of the game's best small forwards in his new role as a defender.

The 29 year-old, who has spent most of his 10-year career playing forward, was once again a solid contributor in the back half for the Magpies during their three-point loss to Geelong on Friday night.

Davis spent time minding dangerous goal-sneak Mathew Stokes as well as resting midfielders Jimmy Bartel and Travis Varcoe, and picked up 20 possessions of his own.

"I'm really enjoying it down there," Davis said post-match.

"It's a challenge each week to play on the small forwards.

"It's something I look forward to and I'll have a good crack at it each week."

After the heartbreak of being left out of last year's premiership team, the 200-gamer has shown character to bounce back and cement a place in Collingwood's back six this season.

He says he's fitted in comfortably with a defensive group that has played together for some time.

"It's not like I'm not good mates with them, it's just that I play alongside them now rather than down the other end of the field," Davis said.

"They're a good bunch of blokes down there and I'm trying my best to fit in, and hopefully I'm doing my job each week to help them."

Talk entering Friday night's match had been about whether or not Collingwood was capable of going through the season undefeated after comfortably dispatching of its first six opponents.

That possibility is now buried, but Davis said the team will quickly move on to its next match.

"I think a few of the boys had mentioned that no team has done it (gone through a season undefeated) for a long time now, but it's nothing that we've worried about," he said.

"We knew it was going to be a tough game tonight, but unfortunately Geelong beat us so we'll move on to next week and try to rectify the loss."
