Collingwood’s skipper Nick Maxwell was prepared for the low scoring contest against Geelong, which confronted 88,115 at the MCG on Friday night.??

It was clear from the outset that goals would be hard to come by with both sides only managing one goal apiece in the first term.  It was a rare sight for supporters of the two highest scoring clubs in the competition.??

“Both teams are very good defensively and I think that’s what you get when you have two good defensive sides up against each other,” Maxwell told CTV in the rooms after the loss.??

“It was going to be a tight battle and a real arm wrestle.”

The Magpies managed to squeeze in front by 11-points early in the third term but poor kicking for goal saw them held goalless for the final quarter and a half of play.

“We got in front and it was looking good but you have to keep your foot down against good teams and unfortunately we didn’t do that tonight.

“It doesn’t help when you kick six goals 14.  The guys have to take more responsibility when taking a shot and take our chances.”??

“It was obviously disappointing.”

Collingwood led the clearance count 31 to 29 and kept pace with Geelong in inside 50s (48-55). ? ?

“I think our midfielders did a reasonable job tonight but we just needed to put it on the scoreboard.”
