COLLINGWOOD ruckman Josh Fraser says his team might look to the old and new as it tries to rebound against Melbourne this weekend.

Fraser says the Magpies let an opportunity slip when they dropped their season opener to Adelaide at the MCG on Saturday.

They return to the same venue this weekend to do battle with last year's wooden-spooners, although the Collingwood big man says his club isn't underestimating the Demons.

While Collingwood's match committee won't meet to finalise its team until later in the week, it is likely there will be changes to the 22 that went down to the Crows by four points.

Anthony Rocca, who returned to football with six goals for the Pies' VFL team last week, and Heath Shaw both trained on Wednesday morning and will push for selection.

"We've still got a couple of days before we need to settle on the side, so I'd imagine he'd [Rocca] come into calculations," Fraser said after training at Gosch's Paddock on Wednesday morning.

"Heater [Heath Shaw] is in a similar boat to Pebbles. I'd imagine that he'd probably be in calculations and they'll weigh up whether he needs a game in the twos or whether he comes straight back in."

After several clubs blooded debutants – many with success – in the opening round of the home and away season, the Magpies might also be tempted to give their highly-touted draftees their first tastes of AFL football.

"We've done it through the NAB Cup with some success as well," Fraser said.

"Again I'm not privy to what they're [the selectors] thinking but Beamsy [Dayne Beams] and Steele Sidebottom are the two logical guys that might come in.

"Again, whether that's this week or whether they're going to bide a bit of time in the VFL side I'm not too sure to be honest."

Fraser believes the Melbourne of 2009 will be far superior to that of last season. He says his team knows from its own experience last year to expect a tough time again this Saturday.

The Magpies won the only duel in 2008 on the Queen's Birthday holiday by 21 points after a persistent Demons outfit refused to give in.

"We're under no illusions this week; it's going to be a tough game and we see Melbourne as a club on the rise," Fraser said.

"They've got a lot of positive things happening down there at the moment; their younger players have been introduced and some of their older players around the ball are hardened players [that] won plenty of footy at the weekend and are really leading from the front.

"So it's going to be a tough game for us and coming off last weekend we really need to all accept responsibility for our games and pick it up this week."
