Collingwood will take five picks into the 2024 Telstra AFL Draft set to be held across Wednesday, Thursday and Friday this week, as the country’s brightest young talent see their football dreams realised.

Here’s everything you need to ahead of the 2024 Draft:

What is the Telstra AFL Draft?

First held in 1986, the AFL's national draft is the main way clubs add players to their lists, alongside the trade period and free agency.

The bulk of the players picked up in the national draft are school leavers who have or will turn 18 this year, who are ready for their first shot at the big time. But any player 18 years or older can nominate for the draft, meaning some players nominate multiple years in a row before finally being drafted.

How does the draft work?

In basic terms, the draft order is determined by reverse ladder position. The team at the bottom of the ladder - which this year was Richmond - gets the No.1 pick, the second-last team gets the No.2 pick, and so on. Once each club has had one pick - theoretically after 18 picks - it all starts again, with the bottom-placed team picking again.

Each block of 18 picks is called a 'round', which is where terms like 'first-round pick' and 'second-round pick' come from. The rounds continue until clubs no longer want to draft players.

However, the final draft order doesn't quite reflect reverse ladder position and can change quite significantly based on compensation picks, bids matched on Academy players and deals done both in the trade period and on draft night, so it ends up looking quite different.

When is it being held?

The 2024 National Draft will be held across two nights on Wednesday 20 November and Thursday November 21 at Marvel Stadium in Melbourne.

Wednesday night will see the first round of selections made – picks one through to 18. But with free agency compensation, father-son, Northern Academy and Next Generation Academy picks, the first round of the draft is expected to be longer.

Thursday night will see the remainder of the National Draft selections made, which is when Collingwood’s picks will be made.

Friday afternoon will see the Rookie Draft and National Draft held.

What picks do Collingwood have?

Collingwood will take picks 52, 55, 60, 66 and 82 into this week’s draft.

Picks 60 and 66 were received via a pick swap from the Brisbane Lions last month.

Are Collingwood taking anyone in the Pre-Season or Rookie Drafts?

As announced last month, Collingwood have committed to selecting Oleg Markov and Ash Johnson in the Rookie Draft after the pair were delisted from the senior list.
