John Greening played 107 games for Collingwood between 1968 and 1976, kicking 70 goals and receiving 35 Brownlow Medal votes. He ran third in the 1970 and 1972 Copeland Trophy, and was leading the 1972 Brownlow Medal count after 14 rounds, when he was felled behind play against St Kilda.

Greening courageously returned two years later, against Richmond in round nine, 1974, and played another eight matches before retiring at the age of 25.

Greening was inducted to the Collingwood Hall of Fame alongside Paul Licuria and Ron Todd in March.

The 60-year-old was playing bowls up on the Gold Coast when collingwoodfc.com.au caught up with him to discuss his lap of honour at the MCG last Sunday.

CFC - How did it feel to be honoured in front of 50,000 Pies fans at the MCG last Sunday against West Coast
(It was) terrific. A good feeling, a ‘nice to be home’ sort of feeling, you know, a nice, warm, ‘come home’ sort of feeling, which is pretty good. It’s been 39 years or something, so it was a lovely feeling.

What was the reception like when you drove past the Collingwood crowd in the Ponsford Stand
It was terrific, you know, a lot of people came down the fence and waved, and I even recognised a few people from years gone by! Of course we’ve all got older, but I did recognise a few people, and it was just a nice, warm feeling
