Former Collingwood defender James Clement has thrown his support behind the St. Vincent Institute since his retirement.

The 230-game veteran became an ambassador for SVI in 2007 and has since promoted the awareness of the Institute’s goals.

“I hardly knew anything about SVI in my playing days,” Clement told collingwoodfc.com.au.

“I was invited to take a tour of the institute a few months after my retirement and I was amazed that such a prominent research facility was right on the doorstep of the Melbourne CBD.

“The facilities and researcher talent are world-class and the work that the Institute produces is amazing.”

SVI conducts research into the cause, prevention and treatment of an array of conditions including Diabetes, cancer, obesity and heart disease, arthritis and osteoporoses, infectious disease and Alzheimer’s disease.

“I am an SVI ambassador primarily associated with Juvenile Type 1 Diabetes research which affects over tens of thousands of Australian children.

“Type 1 diabetes is one of the most common chronic diseases in children which makes it a very serious issue.

“There is a gross misconception in the public arena that Type 1 diabetes is the fault of parents and the management of their children’s diet and exercise.  This is not the case”

“Children who suffer with type 1 diabetes have to endure daily finger pricking tests and injections of insulin to ultimately stay alive.

“Having children of my own, the disease really struck home.”

In the lead up to the round seven clash against St Kilda, both clubs will raise the awareness of the St. Vincent Institute.

Clement will be on hand as a guest speaker for the SVI annual breakfast held midweek before the round.

The captain and coach from both clubs (Collingwood and St Kilda) will be on hand for a Q&A during the breakfast.

Tickets for this unique event are on sale through the Collingwood Football Club.  Call (03) 8412 0107.
