Development coach Brad Scott spoke to CTV about the form of some Magpies who made significant contributions on ANZAC Day.

Scott, who came to the club at the end of 2006 after a 168 games with Hawthorn and Brisbane, including the 2001 and 2002 Lions premiership teams, experienced ANZAC Day football for the first time and gave a glowing review of the occasion.

“What a fantastic win for our club. Having played in a couple of preliminary finals and Grand Finals it’s certainly, other than the grand final, probably the biggest day in footy, so it’s good to see that our players could perform under that sort of pressure,” Scott said.

Having assumed the role of development coach, Scott has formed a close working relationship with a number of young Magpies.

Some of these players, including Chris Bryan, Harry O’Brien and whom made fine contributions against Essendon last week.

“Chris is a really rugged ruckman, he gets around the ground quite well, and as Collingwood fans would already know he kicks the ball beautifully.

“So we just want him to give us a really good contest in the ruck and we thought he did that (against the Bombers). A couple of his efforts going back with the flight of the ball, one where he got a free kick after colliding with Scott Lucas, were inspirational. So that’s what we wanted from him and that’s what we got.

“We’ve got big hopes for Harry and he’s doing the job at the moment. A lot of people probably questioned the match-up on Scott Lucas, but the coaches and we here at Collingwood know what Harry O’Brien’s capable of, and he proved that to the rest of the football world on Wednesday.”

Scott also praised the efforts of ANZAC medallist Heath Shaw.

“He’s turning himself into one of the elite half back flankers in the competition at the moment. His run and drive out of the backline was fantastic”

Each week CTV catches up with a member of the football department to review the previous week’s match, accompanied with player highlights, in ‘THE WEEKEND THAT WAS’.
