Pies fire up on the Paddock
Collingwood trained with intensity in 40 degree heat on Wednesday 28 January.
Additional trainers were on hand as the players worked their way through six drills over the course of 90 minutes.
The heat didn't look to have a factor on the players fervour as the intensity was up for most of the session.
Sports science director, David Buttifant, was utilising the heat to get the players ready for next week’s round one clash against West Coast at Subiaco Oval.
The group split into pairs and worked on grappling; body on body contact.
Dale Thomas and Nick Maxwell paired off and pushed each other to the limit of their exhaustion.
After a short two minute fluid break, the team formed two sides and moved through a zoning drill. The red team’s objective was to work the ball from the kick-out to the forward 50.
Head coach Michael Malthouse called upon Shannon Cox to take the kick-outs. The 14 gamer proved to be a reliable force down back. In one particular play he delivered a short pass to Heath Shaw on the boundary line. Cox then quickly ran up the ground to accept the handball from Shaw and launched a 55 metre pass down the ground to teammate, Chris Dawes.
Paul Medhurst trained with the team for the first half of the session before kicking with rehabilitation coach, Justin Crow, on the neighbouring field.
The session finished with a gruelling 35 minute drill with Malthouse directing players to use the corridor to move the ball down the ground. From the back-pocket, the ball was moved by the offensive side through the middle of the Paddock to the forward 50.
Dayne Beams, Leigh Brown and Tarkyn Lockyer came to the fore during this drill. Not only was their ball usage exceptional, but their ability to move the ball through traffic was impressive.
The players then headed back inside the Lexus Centre to take the season photo.
There will be an intra-club match held at Gosch’s Paddock on Friday 30 January at 10:00 am.
