Collingwood player Andrew Krakouer has undergone an ACL reconstruction and collateral ligament repair surgery after injuring his knee playing for the club’s VFL team in a practice match against Geelong at Simonds Stadium on Saturday.

Because of damage to the collateral ligament and the fact that it needs to be surgically repaired, LARS surgery is not an option.

The injury occurred in the second quarter and Krakouer didn't take any further part in the game.

Krakouer has played 125 matches for Richmond and Collingwood since debuting in 2001.

He made a successful return to AFL football in his first season at Collingwood last year, playing 23 matches and kicking 35 goals to finish second on the club's goal kicking list.

He was recently granted a leave of absence to deal with personal issues, but returned to training at the Westpac Centre last week.
