Collingwood's VFL players will enter the new season under no illusions as to what it will take to taste success with new coach Dale Tapping in charge.

Tapping's mantra is "bloody hard work", a point he stressed in an interview with CTV this week.

"You can't get away from that (the hard work) and the game now is just so challenging and you've just got to be committed very strongly to it," Tapping told CTV.

"If you want to cut corners, you'll come unstuck at the most crucial times and I’ve certainly seen that throughout my coaching experience so I’d like to think that all our boys are pretty committed in terms of doing the hard work."

After spending 2012 in the VFL coaches box as Midfield Development Coach, Tapping has swapped roles with previous head coach Tarkyn Lockyer.

The 48-year-old's vast coaching experience includes senior roles at local, amateur and TAC Cup clubs, meaning he is ideally placed the assess the young talent filtering through the club's doors.

Tapping reserved particular praise for Ben Moloney, an import from Werribee who appears set to receive senior opportunities after several years at reserve grade level.

"Ben has won the last two Development League Best and Fairests.

"He's had limited senior experience probably more so through opportunity, so we'd like to think that we can facilitate that and give him some opportunities to show his wares.??"He's been real impressive on the track and prepares really well."

Collingwood's VFL team plays its first practice match of the season against Essendon's newly reformed VFL side at Victoria Park on Saturday at 11am.
