Despite the clock ticking down towards the 8.30pm deadline, Collingwood remained confident it would clinch the deals it needed on the final night of the 2018 AFL trade period.

Entering the final day, the Magpies were set on reuniting with 2010 premiership hero Dayne Beams and securing Western Bulldog Jordan Roughead, but it took until the final 15 minutes for the deals to be confirmed.

Hours of negotiation with Brisbane and the Western Bulldogs eventually came to a satisfactory result for all parties during a marathon sitting at Marvel Stadium (Docklands).

“When working through it with Brisbane, we knew that we weren’t going to get Dayne for nothing,” Magpies’ List Manager Ned Guy told Collingwood Media.

“We knew we were going to have to come up with something that was going to satisfy their needs, but we also had a key focus on the future and a big part of that was making sure we brought back some picks for the draft coming up next month.

“A big part for us was making sure we got those picks back from Brisbane to ensure we have a stronger draft hand than we would have had we not.”

Beams’ desire to return to Melbourne was one of the key talking points of the trade period, after the 28-year-old spent four years with the Lions on the back of his first six as a Magpie.

“We were growing more confident as the day wore on that we would be able to get this done,” Guy explained.

“It actually wasn’t agreed to until probably 8.10pm, and then there’s the rigmarole of filling out the forms and getting them to the right people and having them signed off.

It was probably just before 8pm that we knew we were going to get it done and it was just a matter of dotting the i’s and crossing the t’s from there.”

Guy said retention of the group that took Collingwood to within a kick of the flag was his team’s aim, and will now shift his sights towards the National Draft to be held across two days on 22 and 23 November.

“We couldn’t be happier with the list we have and to achieve what we have achieved so far this year,” he said.

“To be able to add some depth through a midfield that is really strong; we’ve only strengthened it tonight.

“With Jordan, he can come in and play multiple roles for us, so we think we’re in better shape for 2019 than we were 24 hours ago.”
