Collingwood AFLW skipper Brianna Davey is just happy to be playing footy again.
Having missed almost two full seasons, Davey led the way in her first win in 609 days on Sunday as the Pies beat Fremantle by 21 points.
Backing up her 35 disposal, one goal effort from last week, Davey again found the big sticks to go with her 19 disposals in Round 2.
“It’s so good to be back out there, I just love playing with this group,” she said post-match.
“We’ve got some great players across the board and to be able to play with the likes of Britta and Rowey through the midfield, and other little tackers like Mikala Cann and everyone really, it’s great.
“I think after last week we took some positives from it and some learnings but to get a win on the board this week I think it takes a little bit of pressure off.”
Davey said after a second half fade out against Melbourne last week, there was a real emphasis on starting each quarter well for Sunday’s game.
The Pies did that, bursting out of the blocks in both the first and third quarters with three goals to set up the win.
“For us it’s just the messaging that each quarter it goes back to zero, zero,” she said.
“I think last week coming out at three quarter time we got a little bit complacent in a way thinking we’d done it in the first half.
“This week we made a real focus that each quarter we have to come out strong and we have to be focused all the way through.”
In only her second game back since injuring her knee at the start of last year, the Pies skipper has quickly gotten back to her best.
Registering 23 and then 15 contested possessions in the two games respectively, Davey said she was determined to put the onus on herself in the midfield in what was a hotly contested game against the Dockers.
“The contested ball, the pressure was high, I think both teams are really good pressure teams,” she said.
“We could definitely feel it in the midfield, every time we grabbed the ball we had two or three Freo players get into us.
“The message was to get it forward and get it in our territory and on our terms and we did that well.”
The Pies will be back at Victoria Park next Sunday when they host the Gold Coast Suns from 3.05pm.
Davey said there was a focus on making life for opposing teams as hard as possible when they travel to the ground.
“We love Vic Park; it is our home and it’s one of those ground we know how to play well,” she said.
“We love when teams come into our home and we don’t want them to get a win on our ground, this is our home deck.
“We’ll start to look at Gold Coast and see what we need to do there.”
