Collingwood AFLW Head Coach Steve Symonds addressed the media following the Pies’ 21-point victory over Fremantle on Sunday afternoon.
Having put the game to bed by three quarter time, Symonds was pleased with the way the Pies attacked the contest from the opening bounce.
“We thought the first three quarters we started to get back to our brand and played some pretty strong footy,” he said.
“It was a high-pressure game, both teams the pressure ratings were through the roof and then the last quarter we probably took then foot off a little bit.
“It’s good lessons for us to taken from that, it’s probably the second game in a row we’ve taken the foot off the pedal just a whisker and we’ve just got to work our way through that.”
A contested game from the outset, Symonds was happy with how the Pies handled and applied pressure.
“We can take pride in that, contested ball is an area that we want to be strong at,” he said.
“The pressure was unbelievable from both teams, so it was who was going to absorb that and then be able to make really good decisions with the ball.”
Recruit Nell Morris-Dalton kicked two brilliant first quarter goals, with Symonds saying she provided a spark up forward.
“Nell’s giving us a really good look, she’s really composed with the ball,” he said.
“It’s something that I think last year we had really good inside fifty numbers but our accuracy on goal was very, very low.
“It’s an area we wanted to improve on and Nell’s got the composure when she does get ball in hand that she does finish.
“We think the way we move the footy really compliments her.”
With six different goal kickers, Symonds said his side was always looking for new avenues to goal.
“That’s something we spoke about to make our forward line multi-functional,” he said.
“We probably relied over the last couple of seasons on one or two people.
“We’ve just got to keep it simple by getting it in there and letting them do their job.
“We’ve played a couple of pressure forwards which we haven’t done in the past, so we’re hoping they do their job up forward.”
Symonds also said the returns of leaders Bri Davey and Brit Bonnici, who combined for 39 disposals in the win, had lifted the team’s spirits.
“Certainly when you’ve got two of your leaders out on the field (it’s great),” he said.
“They’re finding their feet, probably in the last two games they’ve fatigued towards the back end of the contest and that’s only natural.
“Their performance in the first half of games has been really strong.
“We think as they get more match fitness week by week … we’ll start seeing our group get stronger and stronger as the season goes.”
