Dayne Beams to remain a Magpie until 2015
Midfielder Dayne Beams has agreed to a new three-year deal with the club.
Beams is enjoying a breakout year, his fourth in the AFL, and on the back of a long string of outstanding performances has in recent weeks become the subject of All-Australian and Brownlow medal discussion.
The 22 year-old Queenslander has played 18 of 19 games this season, for a career total of 77, and is producing career high numbers as the frontline mid-fielder he was required to become when team-mate Luke Ball suffered a season-ending knee injury in round three. Beams has gathered more than 30 disposals in 10 of his last 11 matches and is averaging 30.9 possessions a match across the season.
Beams was drafted from the Gold Coast region with pick 29 in the 2008 national draft and was a member of the 2010 Collingwood premiership side. A sense of the purpose witnessed from him in 2012 became apparent late last season when Beams selflessly owned up to a groin injury and ruled himself out of the grand final against Geelong.
Collingwood Director of Football, Geoff Walsh, has described Beams’ new contract as a mutual show of faith.
“Dayne is rapidly becoming the player many suspected he could be,” Walsh said.
“He is clearly showing the benefits of dedicating himself to the game, and to Collingwood, and I think his new contract reflects not only this progress but where he and we believe he can take his career.”
