COLLINGWOOD coach Mick Malthouse has leapt to the defence of Anthony Rocca after the key forward's disappointing performance in Saturday's Anzac Day clash at the MCG.
Rocca booted the first goal of the game, but finished with just five touches from a tussle won by Essendon veteran Dustin Fletcher.
The 31-year-old missed most of last season with an ankle injury and Malthouse said Rocca's long-term absence meant that he needed to be given time.
His return against the Brisbane Lions last week was his first game since round 13.
"Don't forget Anthony Rocca has been out for a number of weeks and hasn't had a massive pre-season," Malthouse said.
"Anthony Rocca is a very, very important player for this football club.
"When he gets enough games under his belt, he will be that instructive type of person that Jack Anthony needs.
"[That's] not because Jack's not playing good footy, but he needs guidance."
Malthouse reiterated that Anthony, who booted four goals against the Bombers, needed an experienced head to help him develop his game.
