Collingwood has received a first round national draft selection, handed down by the AFL, after Dale Thomas transferred to Carlton through free agency.
The Magpies elected not to match the offer the Blues made to the 26-year-old and have received overall pick No.11 as compensation.
Collingwood now holds two first round picks in this year's national draft (10 and 11).
"The rules, as they stand, attempt to offset the loss of a free agent. That being the case, we believe the compensation to be adequate and appropriate," responded national recruiting manager Derek Hine.
