Premiership captain Nick Maxwell believes Collingwood need to prevent the opposition from scoring consecutive goals as they attempt to return to the winners list after Sunday’s loss to Richmond.
Maxwell used his position on Collingwood Media’s Monday’s With Maxy to highlight a concern he believes has taken the momentum away from the Magpies in the last two weeks.
He believes the problem is a mental one and will be a point of focus for Nathan Buckley during the week.
“It’s something I think we’ve really got to address,” Maxwell said.
“It comes down to philosophy.
“I’m not sure exactly how the Pies are going to look at it, but I know that’ll certainly be something Nathan Buckley will look at during the week.”
From the 24-minute mark of the first quarter, Collingwood conceded six consecutive goals to Richmond and squandered a 25-point first quarter lead.
The Magpies found the lead once again in the second term before another run of consecutive goals have Richmond the edge early in the third term.
In addition to highlighting this area of improvement, Maxwell also praised the performance of midfielder Dane Swan.
Swan had 32 disposals, two goals and 11 clearances against the Tigers in arguably his best game of the year.
The performance was enough to prompt Maxwell into labelling the 2011 Brownlow Medallist his player of the game.
He believes Swan’s performances in 2015 show considerable improvement from last season’s form.
“He was outstanding. He loves playing against the Tigers,” Maxwell said.
“Last year you look at Swanny, and by his own omission he only had one great game and that was on ANZAC Day.
“We’ve already seen this year that quite a few times he’s played at his absolute best.”
After injuries to two of Collingwood’s key midfielders, Maxwell expressed that Swan’s form has proved timely.
“With Sidebottom and Greenwood not in the team, they need that big-body mid to go in there and help Pendlebury and help Crisp.
Monday’s With Maxy will return next Monday morning for a complete review of this week’s clash with the Gold Coast Suns at Metricon Stadium.
