Stand by for more Mason Cox’s in the AFL in years to come.

Collingwood’s 211cm Texas has been a revolution for the Magpies in 2016.

He’s played nine games, kicked 15 goals and been the subject of dozens of headlines along the way.

Now, an American who’s been closely following his game says there will be more compatriots who follow him into Australia’s game.

Gil Griffin is an LA-based author who hasn’t written a book about the journey of American basketballers transferring their skills to try and play in the AFL.

Gil classes himself as “totally obsessed with Aussie Rules football”. The first AFL Combine in Los Angeles was hosted just minutes away from his house, and with years of football knowledge, he was the perfect man to cover it.

In the years since, he’s followed the men forging their place in the AFL. Jumping with the Chance features chapters on St Kilda’s Jason Holmes, Carlton’s Matthew Korcheck, ex-North Melbourne ruckman Eric Wallace, and of course Mason Cox.

Griffin says there will be more to follow.

“These guys have a choice. If they go to Europe (to play basketball), they’re going to be dealing with some cultural and linguistic barriers and probably not make that much money,” Griffin said.

“But if they have an opportunity to learn a game from scratch, surmount that challenge and be playing the number one sport in the country that doesn’t have a language barrier and is reasonably similar to America, if I was in that position, I’d go for that option too.

“They’re smart, and they’re also physically developed. We hear all the time here in Australia, the kids that get picked up in the draft, they’re 18 and 19 years old and they want to play in the ruck but they’re not developed.

“These guys are physically mature, they have a little bit of life experience, and they can also mentor some of the young guys too.”

Griffin this week discussed the book, his AFL experiences, and life as an AFL-loving American on 'Sports Galore' with Adam Treloar.
