Collingwoodfc.com.au takes a look at the recent history between Collingwood and Sydney courtesy of some great action shots taken by AFL Media.

In the beginning...
2000

Nathan Buckley stands arm in arm with two Magpies who spent time with the Sydney Swans - Mark Orchard and Paul Williams - moments after Collingwood defeated the home side by five points thanks to an Anthony Rocca goal 30-seconds before the siren. It was Collingwood's fourth win in as many games.

Three Nathan Buckleys. A Collingwood supporter's dream.

Leon Davis, wearing the No. 40, topples over Brad Seymour at the MCG in round 19, 2000.

2001

Jarrod Molloy soars over Anthony Rocca in round 10, 2001, and takes Sydney's Andrew Dunkley out with him.

Injured pair Nathan Buckley and Andrew Ukovic can only watch as the Swans hold on to defeat the Pies by 18 points at Colonial Stadium in round 10.

2002

Tony Lockett returned briefly in 2002 after a two-year retirement and gave Shane Wakelin something to think about at Manuka Oval. And the player in the No. 39 who is being tackled by big Plugger? That's James Podsiadly. You may have heard of him before?

Scott Burns received two Brownlow votes for his 30 disposals and two goals in the Magpies' 11-point win over the Swans in round 10. Former teammate Paul Williams scooped the three Brownlow votes despite playing in a losing side.

2003

Nick Davis was public enemy No. 1 when he returned to face Collingwood for the first time since leaving the club at the end of 2002. The half forward, who played 71 games in the black and white, had the last laugh when he kicked the sealer in the Swans' 20-point victory.

Andrew Williams' bright start to the season was brought to a halt when he met solidly with Swans star Barry Hall.

Chris Tarrant did all he could to drag Collingwood over the line with 10 marks and five goals. It wasn't enough to stop Sydney winning by 20 points.

In the round 21 return game, these three Magpies - Heath Scotland, Chris Tarrant and Josh Fraser - all played blinders as Collingwood broke away to an 18-point win in front of 73,393 at Stadium Australia.

2004

The two sides played in the second last ever match at Victoria Park, where Heath Shaw ran out onto the ground in a Collingwood jumper for the first time. He immediately showed that he was happy to bite off more than he could chew and then chew like crazy - like when he tackled a rampaging Barry Hall.

Despite enduring his share of hamstring injuries, Nathan Buckley was still a shining light in a difficult season. He did all he could to get the Magpies right to the line in the stand-alone Saturday night game in round 13, but Sydney clung to a six-point lead when the final siren sounded.

2005

Almost a year to the day, Buckley was in the thick of it again. He played his first match since round one due to surgery on his hamstring and was one of Collingwood's best with 28 possessions and a desperate smother on Swan Ben Mathews.

But Cameron Cloke could only wonder what if as Collingwood finished the game one-point in arrears. Controversy surrounded the time clock that ticked down in the final minute despite Sydney's Amon Buchanan cramping up after marking in the back pocket. The Magpies had the chance to pull off the win in the dying minutes when Alan Didak soccered goalward, only for the ball to bounce in the wrong direction.

2006

The annual trip to Stadium Australia paid dividends when Anthony Rocca, Rhyce Shaw and Ryan Lonie helped the side to a 13-point win. Lonie played one of the best games of his career, tagging Adam Goodes and kicking two goals himself en route to the only Brownlow vote of his career.

2007

Mick Malthouse coaches a young debutant the No. 41 by the name of Sharrod Wellingham during a practice match at North Sydney Oval.

Acting captain Ben Johnson accepts the Lockett-Coventry Cup after the surprising round 12 win at Stadium Australia.

This caper's easy! Nick Maxwell congratulates Marty Clarke who led the Magpies off after gathering 20 possessions in his first game.

The 2007 provided several highlights for Collingwood supporters, including a total of three wins over the Swans. Shane Wakelin's battles with Barry Hall, first-year player Tyson Goldsack's ability to shut down Michael O'Loughlin and Guy Richards' tussles with Peter Everett and Darren Jolly were features of each meeting.

But the real highlight was Nathan Buckley's first game of the season in round 21. The captain had missed the opening 20 rounds due to hamstring injuries, but he wasn't to be denied one last crack at a premiership.

Anthony Rocca looked down and out at half time of the Elimination Final after landing heavily, but bounced back with six goals in the second half to nail the Swans.

Scott Burns, Sean Rusling and Paul Medhurst can't believe it - Collingwood has booked a date with the West Coast Eagles in the Semi Final!

2008

Dale Thomas kicked three goals in the Magpies' 29-point win in round 14. Collingwood kept Sydney to only two goals in the first three quarters.

Youngsters Chris Dawes and Shannon Cox celebrate after the latter goaled in only his third game for the season - round 21, 2008, at Etihad Stadium.

2009

Mick Malthouse brought grandson Zachary out into the middle in his 600th game as a VFL/AFL coach.

John Anthony was ecstatic when he kicked the first goal of Collingwood's 43-point win at the MCG on a Sunday afternoon in round 21.

2010

Steele Sidebottom, Brad Dick and Tarkyn Lockyer couldn't contain their excitement when their contributions led to a 25-point win at Stadium Australia.

2011

Travis Cloke celebrates his career-high six goals and the team's six-point win at the Olympic Stadium with the fans.

Collingwood's supporters always turn out in huge numbers at the club's annual trip to Sydney. Let's make sure there's plenty of black and white in the crowd again on Saturday night.
