Collingwood list changes
Collingwood has announced further changes to its senior and rookie lists following trade week.
Ruckman Chris Bryan and midfielder Danny Stanley have both been informed they will not be offered new playing contracts for the 2010 season.
Bryan, 27, played 30 games in three seasons for the Magpies after coming to the Lexus Centre via the pre-season draft at the end of 2006 from Carlton, where he played 16 games in two seasons. He was originally drafted by the Blues from VFL club Frankston with the 73rd pick in the 2004 AFL Draft.
A booming left-foot kick, Bryan provided a physical presence in the ruck and averaged nine possessions, four marks and 11 hitouts per game in his three seasons in black and white.
Bryan’s best year was 2008, when he played 17 senior games including both finals against Adelaide and St Kilda. He also played in the memorable extra-time semi-final victory over West Coast in 2007, as well as the five-point preliminary final loss to Geelong a week later.
Stanley, 21, was drafted from the Geelong Falcons under 18 team with the 21st overall pick in the 2005 AFL Draft, and played five matches for the Magpies.
A robust midfielder, he debuted in round 11, 2007 in the Queen’s Birthday loss to Melbourne, and played two matches in each of the 2007 and 2008 seasons, as well as one in 2009 (round seven v St Kilda).
Rookie list players Toby Thoolen, Johnny Bennell and Kevin Dyas have also been delisted.
19-year-old Thoolen, a 196-centimetre key position player from the Bendigo Pioneers under 18 team, spent 2008 on the senior list after being selected by the club with its second pick (No.47 overall) in the 2007 draft, before being delisted and re-drafted onto the rookie list for 2009.
Bennell, a 19-year-old small forward from the Peel Thunder in WA, was the club’s final pick in the 2008 rookie draft. He spent 2009 playing for the club’s VFL team.
Dyas, a running defender from County Armagh in Ireland, spent two years on the rookie list after signing an international rookie contract at the end of 2007, and will return to his homeland. He played for the VFL Magpies and did particularly well to have a meaningful impact in 2009 after sustaining a severe hamstring injury in the latter stages of the 2008 season.
Dyas will be joined back in Ireland by countryman Martin Clarke, who recently decided to retire from AFL football after three seasons and 46 games with the Magpies.
Veteran key forward Anthony Rocca also announced his retirement from AFL football at the conclusion of the 2009 season.
Rocca, 32, played 242 games in 15 seasons at the elite level, including 220 in 13 seasons with Collingwood. He also booted 404 goals for the Magpies.
Following the acquisition of former Sydney ruckman Darren Jolly in last week’s trade period, Collingwood will have picks 30, 62 and 78 and 94 in the 2009 AFL Draft, to be held on Thursday 26 November at Etihad Stadium.
Following these retirements, delistings, and the recent trade period, Collingwood has 37 players on its senior list and four players on its rookie list. The club is allowed to have up to 40 players on its senior list (including two players who qualify for the veterans list) or 38 without any veterans list players, and up to seven players on its rookie list.
