At least one, if not both of Dane Swan and Dayne Beams have polled AFLCA votes in 12 of Collingwood’s 16 games this season as they continue to push their standards to new levels.
Despite losing to Hawthorn by 47-points, no one else had more of the ball than the Magpie pair.
Much debate centred around Swan’s influence on the outcome, considering he won a career-high 49 possessions amid the one-way traffic. Beams, meanwhile, was considered by some to have been the Magpies’ best by virtue of the four goals and six tackles that were coupled with his 34 possessions.
It adds further intrigue to the votes submitted by Nathan Buckley and Alistair Clarkson.
The two coaches voted Beams the equal second best player on the field with seven votes alongside Hawk midfielder Sam Mitchell.
Swan, meanwhile, polled two votes, which is sure to only add to the debate over the mass of possession won by players such as Gary Ablett and Swan himself.
Hawthorn’s Jordan Lewis was rewarded for his five goals and 20 disposals with nine of a possible 10 votes. His teammate Cyril Rioli also received recognition for his contribution on Saturday, earning five votes.
The weekend’s voting has catapulted Beams into outright fourth position on the competition leader board with 67 votes. He sits behind Richmond’s Trent Cotchin (75 votes), Essendon’s Jobe Watson (71 votes) and Adelaide’s Scott Thompson (68 votes). Scott Pendlebury is the other Magpie in the top 10, sitting seventh on 63 votes.
