In the beginning...

It was the first time since round three, 1997, that top had beaten bottom. Collingwood had been thumped by 112 points by the Dockers a fortnight earlier and languished in last place, yet managed to defeat the top of the ladder Eagles, despite the visitors kicking the first three goals of the game. That 1997 clash had coincidentally been played between the Magpies (top) and the Saints (bottom).

The win was Collingwood's first since round three.

Blake Caracella kicked five goals and backed it up with another five against Hawthorn seven days later.

Do you remember...
...not many people will. They were pretty forgettable encounters. Four pre-season games, all notable in their own way if you dig deep enough.



Mick Malthouse congratulates Alan Didak on his first game in the 2001 Ansett Cup. The Magpies, thanks to youngsters Fraser, Scotland and Johnson, got over the Eagles in Perth for the first time since 1992.



Hopefully you don't remember much about these two games. Collingwood was soundly beaten in its two Wizard Cup encounters with West Coast in 2004 and 2005. Chris Judd breaks a Luke Mullins tackle, while former Eagle Chad Morrison swings onto his left foot in his second match in the black and white in Darwin.



Nick Maxwell was reported and subsequently suspended for a month for a bump on West Coast's Patrick McGinnity in the first match of the 2009 NAB Cup. Collingwood challenged the Match Review Panel's decision and had the suspension wiped. It was Maxwell's first match since being appointed as club captain two months prior.



The dreadlocked Scott Pendlebury during Collingwood's win over the Eagles in a routine NAB Cup contest in the west notable only for the career ending neck injury suffered by promising rookie Tom Hunter.
