Krakouer puts hand up
Andrew Krakouer is surging towards a senior recall on the eve of the AFL finals
In just his fourth game of the year after tearing his ACL in a practice game in February, Krakouer was the standout for the Pies against Werribee at Victoria Park with 27 disposals.
Collingwood VFL coach Tarkyn Lockyer said Krakouer was right in the mix to slot in to the senior team against Essendon in round 23.
"He'd have to be a chance, we'll have to work that out during the week," Lockyer said.
"But he's holding up his end of the bargain, he looks fit and he's been pulling up well (after games).
"That comes down to a match committee decision, but he's certainly given himself every opportunity."
Playing around 70-80 per cent of game time, Krakouer was a step above the competition, accumulating 18 disposals to half-time, before going on to finish with a team-high 27.
Lockyer explained it was a planned move for Krakouer to spend most of his time through the midfield to ensure he was able to overcome the significant jump from VFL to AFL football.
"Coming off the injury that he's had, obviously fitness would be a concern. So we wanted to expose him to as much midfield stuff as we could, so he could get the miles in his legs and have him prepared in that regard," Lockyer said.
Also spending time forward, Krakouer's ability to hit the contest and gather at top speed was noticeable.
He also showed tremendous polish with his ball use, was constructive and inventive with his possessions, and displayed an innate ability to win the ball cleanly at clearance situations.
The 29-year-old has been steadily building his playing time since returning to football in early August against the Bendigo Gold.
Lockyer said a player of Krakouer's class and quality could be influential for the Pies under the increased pressure of finals.
"He brings the excitement and the x-factor and he's got the ability to change the game off his own boot," Lockyer said.
Brent Macaffer, who also returned through the VFL against the Gold after injuring his knee in a similar manner to Krakouer in February, was rested after the Pies decided to put him on ice until next year.
Despite Krakouer's performance, the Magpies were outplayed by an impressive finals-bound Werribee, who recorded a thumping 82-point win.
North Melboune-listed players Ben Warren, Levi Greenwood and Ben Speight also impressed for the Tigers.
Young Pies forward Jackson Paine finished with three goals and Lockyer said he would be around the mark come finals time after some "encouraging" performances at VFL level.
