Goals: When and where do they come from?
Collingwood kicked 331 goals in the home-and-away season averaging 15 a game. The team booted a goal 68% of the time from the corridor ranking them 14th in the league. The Magpies kicked 16% of goals from the left side (third highest in the competition) and 15% from the right side (fifth highest in the competition).
The team scored eight goals from the right acute angle which led the league and eight from the left acute angle which was second in the league (“acute angle”: greater than 60 degrees).
Over the course of the regular season Collingwood scored 2267 points. The club’s highest scoring quarter was the second with 643 total points and the lowest scoring quarter was the first with 490 total points.
Collingwood scored higher than its opponent in 50 quarters this season (out of a possible 88) and 39 of those quarters contributed to a win.
The second quarter was Collingwood’s most dominant quarter winning 20 out of 22 for the season. The Magpies only managed eight fourth quarter wins and six of those resulted in eventual victories.
Opponents scored the most against the Magpies in the fourth quarter (617 points) and the least in the second quarter (416 points).
The Magpies were dangerous in the 10-15 minute stage of the second quarter kicking 134 points for the season and least effective in the 10-15 minute stage of the fourth quarter outscored by 78 points.
Dane Swan: a premiership quarter specialist
Dane Swan rose to the top of the table in the third quarter averaging a team and personal high of 6.8 disposals (including finals). He took 2.3 marks in the third quarter; his next highest quarter was 1.6 in the first. Swan averaged 4.4 kicks in the third term which was a personal and team best.
Swan ranked 11th highest in the league in disposals (average) in the third quarter, third highest in kicks (average) in the quarter and fifth highest in marks per term.
The 2008 Brownlow medallist, Adam Cooney, averaged 6.9 disposals in the third term, 2.8 kicks and .8 marks.
