Simon Pretigiacomo has returned to Collingwood after calling an end to his illustrious playing career at the end of the 2010 season, having notched 233 games for the Magpies.
Prestgiacomo, who held down Collingwood’s backline for 15 seasons, is now a member of the front office having been appointed to the role of merchandise operations manager.
After famously pulling himself out of last year’s grand final due to an injury sustained the day before the game, Prestigiacomo took some time off with his wife Belinda and two kids to reassess the next chapter of his life.
The 33-year-old had studied sports administration during his playing days, and found an applicable role at the Westpac Centre which suited the next stage of his career.
“I spoke to Gary Pert (CEO) early in 2011 and he said there was a position which would suit my skill set,” Prestigiacomo told collingwoodfc.com.au in his first week on the job.
“Due to the growth experienced in the merchandise department, there is a need for someone to manage the online marketing and administration side of the business.
“Fortunately I could come to an agreement with the club.”
Prestigiacomo now sits at a desk not far from where his old locker (currently used by Alex Fasolo) is and admits it’s a strange feeling not to interact with the footy department. As announced by Mick Malthouse during the defender's retirement, the club’s first draft pick each year, who is new to AFL, will wear the number 35 guernsey for one season, in honour of greats such as Prestigiacomo and Peter Daicos.
“It’s great to see my former teammates but yes, odd to be at the club in a different capacity.
“I am now chasing after Harry O’Brien for a signature on a merchandise item.
“How quickly things can change.”
Prestigiacomo was honoured earlier this year during the unfurling of the flag before the round three contest against Carlton at the MCG. The much-loved Magpie hoisted the flag to the top of the flag pole in front of a packed stadium.
This is the second signing of a former Magpie this year with Anthony Rocca taking up a development role for the club's VFL side.
