Injured Collingwood forward Brent Macaffer has told The Club about his despair upon learning that he would miss the next 12 months with a ruptured ACL.

The Club broadcast Macaffer’s surgery on FOX FOOTY on Wednesday night. He then spoke to studio host Michael Christian about the aftermath of the injury that was sustained in the opening minutes of the Magpies’ first NAB Cup match of the year against the Western Bulldogs.

“At the time of impact, I felt my knee make a massive crunching sound and I knew something was definitely wrong. That’s why I grabbed for it and went straight down into the rooms,” Macaffer told The Club.

“The doc straight away knew as he fiddled around with it that something was wrong.”

Having only played four games in an injury interrupted 2011, the premiership forward had been hoping for a smoother run in his sixth season at the club.

“It was a pretty rough year last year with injuries. I had a full pre-season and didn’t miss a session and then in the first 10 minutes of the first NAB Cup game to go down with something like that.

“As soon as the doc told me I was pretty shattered and for about 15 or 20 minutes I was pretty inconsolable. But I got over that straight away. All the coaches have been fantastic so I’ve just got to get on with my rehab and look forward to next year.”

The 24-year-old has played 30 games since his debut on Anzac Day in 2009 and is looking to add to his tally as soon as extensive rehabilitation concludes.

“I’m moving around fine now and I’ve been going to the club about three or four times a week and I’m doing a little bit at the moment but gradually doing more and more.

“Hopefully in a couple of weeks I’ll be doing the bike and swimming and stuff like that.”
