Match Review Panel clears Grand Final players
ALL PLAYERS who participated in the drawn grand final between Collingwood and St Kilda have been cleared to play in the rematch by the match review panel
Collingwood’s Darren Jolly and Ben Johnson, and St Kilda’s Brendon Goddard and Sam Gilbert were involved in incidents that were assessed but the four players can relax this week with their actions deemed below an offence.
Jolly’s contact against St Kilda big man Justin Koschitzke in the fourth quarter was looked at but the panel found the Magpie ruckman had tried to hit a high bouncing ball back into play and made high contact with the Saint with an open hand.
It was deemed his action was not a striking motion and dismissed as unreportable.
His teammate Johnson had a run in with Leigh Montagna in the third quarter but the panel, based on the available footage and a dismissive medical report from St Kilda, decided the contact made was below what was required for a report to be laid.
Montagna was not treated for any injury as a result of the action.
In the other camp, Goddard can breathe a sigh of relief with his contact against former teammate Luke Ball in the third quarter deemed to be insignificant.
As was the case with Johnson’s case, the panel decided not to pursue a charge after it reviewed the footage and another no-injury medical report, this time lodged by Collingwood.
Gilbert’s contact against Leigh Brown in the final quarter was also assessed.
The panel decided high contact was made as the two players prepared for a marking contest; Brown attempting to take it and Gilbert looking to spoil.
It was decided that Gilbert’s action was not a striking motion and therefore unreportable.
The AFL Commission decided on Sunday to throw out the rule that would have seen any player reported face double demerit points, owing to the unique scenario of a draw.
