Collingwood inducted three players and one team into its Hall of Fame at the 2008 Season Launch and Hall of Fame Dinner at Crown Palladium on Monday night.

COLLINGWOOD TEAM OF 1958
  • At the beginning of the 1958 VFL season Melbourne - led by Norm Smith and Ron Barrassi - were considered invincible. They had won the last three Premierships and were expected to equal the record of the Collingwood Machine Team before breaking it the next year.
  • In 58 Collingwood were rebuilding and not considered a serious finals contender. Melbourne had won 9 of the last ten matches against Collingwood and had not lost a final to the Magpies in 30 years.
  • The critics said no one could stop Melbourne - certainly not Collingwood.
  • Coach Phonse Kyne and his young team however had other ideas.
  • It is history now that the Collingwood team of 1958 would capture one of the most famous and exciting Premiership victories ever in the history of VFL/AFL football – the upset of the century.
  • Described at the time by Syd Coventry, the Captain of the Machine Team and President in 1958, as “the greatest performance in the history of the Collingwood Football Club.”
