Shane O’Bree and Sean Rusling have both retired from AFL football.

O’Bree, 31, enjoyed a stellar 246-game career that began in 1998 after he was drafted with the 10th overall pick by Brisbane at the end of 1997.

He played 19 games in two seasons with the Lions before joining Collingwood for the 2000 season via the first pick in the pre-season draft. He would go onto play 227 fine games in black and white stripes.

Originally drafted from Beaufort in country Victoria, O’Bree’s consistency over the course of his career is highlighted by the fact that in his 10 seasons at Collingwood prior to this one, he finished top five in the Copeland Trophy voting three times (2000, 01, 05), and in top 10 another four times. He was also the recipient of the Darren Millane award in 2006 as best clubman.

O’Bree played a major role in both the 2002 and 2003 grand final years, and is one of only 30 players in history to play 200 VFL/AFL games for the Magpies.

Rusling, meanwhile, endured a horrid run with injury in his five seasons at Collingwood after being selected from West Adelaide in South Australia with the 23rd pick in the 2004 draft.

The immensely athletic 23-year-old played 17 games and booted 19 goals, and showed glimpses of his enormous potential with a fine finish to 2007 when he was a key part of the Magpies side that narrowly missed out on a grand final berth.

He managed seven VFL matches in 2009 but again was hit by injury in 2010 managing only a handful of VFL games.

Both O’Bree and Rusling were highly regarded by their peers and everyone at the Collingwood Football Club.
