Facebook - choose your moment
They may have only joined the competition 25 years ago, but the Brisbane Lions have been involved in several memorable clashes with Collingwood.
In 2012, the official Collingwood Facebook page is nominating three moments for its fans to vote on to decide which one will feature in the page’s new timeline.
Three matches against Brisbane in its two guises have been nominated for our Facebook fans to choose from.
The matches range from the 101-point win in Round 20, 1991, when the Macedonian Marvel Peter Daicos had a party at Carrara with 13 goals, the farewell of club legends Craig Kelly and Alan Richardson with a 49-point win at Victoria Park in Round 22, 1996 and the memorable three-point thriller at Colonial Stadium in Round Eight, 2002 when the new Magpies came of age.

In last week’s voting, the 102-point belting of Geelong in Round Eight, 2006, was chosen by our Facebook fans as the fifth moment to be included in our timeline.

“Don’t tell me he has kicked that. I will NOT believe it!”
Channel Seven commentator Sandy Roberts was almost lost for words when Peter Daicos kicked the most outrageous of his 13 goals in Collingwood’s 101-point win over the Brisbane Bears in Round 20, 1991 at Carrara. The 250-game champion was at his mercurial best that night. His 13.1 (coupled with 19 disposals) was a career high, and deservedly earned him three Brownlow votes. Legend has it that Daicos actually apologised to Brisbane backman John Gastev after the defender had done all he could to cover his opponent, only for Daicos to dribble through the most miraculous of goals.
Collingwood 26.16 (172)
Brisbane Bears 10.11 (71)
Goals - Daicos 13, Morwood 3, Manson 2, Lehmann 2, Starcevich 2
Disposals - Shaw 38, Francis 33, Millane 33

Ned and Richo say farewell
It was an emotional day at Victoria Park as two of the club’s champions retired in front of their adoring fans. Craig Kelly and Alan Richardson, who had been at the coalface of the 1990 premiership, combined for only 10 possessions in their final outings as league footballers but they received the perfect send off. Despite playing the top-four bound Bears and being well out of finals contention themselves, Collingwood rallied to belt Brisbane by 49-points in their last game of the year. Paul Williams and Shane Watson kicked four each while the Scotts, Russell and Crow, shared 64 disposals between them. Paul Sharkey played the best game of his career with 27 disposals and Andrew Schauble received three Brownlow votes.
Collingwood 15.10 (100)
Brisbane Bears 6.15 (51)
Goals - Williams 2, Watson 2, T.Francis 2, Pitt 2, Liddell 2
Disposals - Russell 34, Crow 30, T.Francis 27, Sharkey 27
Brownlow Votes: 3. A.Schauble (Coll), 2. T.Francis (Coll), 1. P.Williams (Coll)
Rumble in the jungle
There isn’t a Collingwood fan that doesn’t remember this game fondly. Having rapidly rebuilt under Mick Malthouse from the dark days of the late 1990s, Collingwood entered the match at Colonial Stadium in second place on the ladder behind the Brisbane Lions who hadn’t lost any ground from their premiership the previous season. In front of one of the noisiest crowds in recent memory, Collingwood trailed by eight-points at half time but an inspired three goal burst from Rupert Betheras swung the game midway through the third quarter. The final quarter was a thriller; Collingwood’s defence grimly holding on to its rapidly diminishing lead and Brisbane’s midfield surging forward time and time again. Shane Wakelin, James Clement and Glenn Freeborn stood tall under heavy pressure, complementing the work done further afield by Nathan Buckley (31 possessions) and Chris Tarrant (five goals). When the siren sounded, Channel Ten commentator Steve Quartermain proclaimed that “tonight’s the night the new Magpies have come of age!” and few could disagree.
Collingwood 17.12 (114)
Brisbane Lions 16.15 (111)
Goals - Tarrant 5, Betheras 3, Rocca 3, Buckley 2
Disposals - Buckley 31, Licuria 25, Betheras 22, Clement 22
