Make replay members' GF: McGuire
Eddie McGuire calls on the AFL to open next weekend’s grand final replay up to members
More than 100,000 people packed the MCG, but only a third of those seats were available to members of the two participating clubs.
The Magpies and Saints will resume their battle for the 2010 premiership next Saturday and McGuire said the AFL should make more tickets available for die-hard fans of both clubs, rather than corporate partners or neutral members.
“I think it would be sensational if the members got first crack. I’ll ring [AFL CEO] Andrew Demetriou now and ask him if the members can have first crack at the tickets - the corporates have all had their day,” McGuire said after the game.
“I’m not sure if we can do it, but I would love to have 60,000 Collingwood members here next week. I think the Saints have 40,000 members so there’s your 100,000. It would be fantastic.”
Collingwood and St Kilda played out only the third-ever draw in AFL grand final history, with both sides locked away on 68 points at the final siren.
The result caused chaos, with both clubs left with little choice but to cancel or scale back post-match functions and the Pies even forced to cancel their best and fairest awards night, which was scheduled for Friday.
The Magpies were involved in the last drawn grand final, with North Melbourne in 1977 and McGuire said it was exciting for the club to be in that position again.
“This is history in the making - It's exciting. Two draws in a lifetime…how about that?” McGuire said.
“I don't know if it's showbiz or not but, oh well, we're back again next week and Andrew Demetriou has just gone home the most contented cat in the world. He's just smoking a cigar because the money is going to be rolling in.
“You can lie down and complain, but the fact of the matter is that the Collingwood Football Club has the chance to win a premiership at 2.30pm at the MCG next Saturday- we’ll be here.”
