COLLINGWOOD assistant coach Nathan Buckley is confident the Pies' culture of success and the strong example set by the club's leaders will see Dane Swan, Dale Thomas and Scott Pendlebury spurn overtures from Greater Western Sydney.

The star trio has been the focus of a war of words between GWS coach Kevin Sheedy and Collingwood president Eddie McGuire as the cashed-up Giants look to build their list.

Sheedy drew the ire of McGuire when he expressed his confidence in luring one to the Pies' stars away, but Buckley is convinced the trio will remain in black and white next year and beyond.

"Our captain (Nick Maxwell) and Harry O'Brien signed on really early and had a real strong show of faith in the environment that the club provides," Buckley said after overseeing the Magpies' Friday morning training session ahead of their NAB Cup opener.

"I think Dale Thomas' comments yesterday were fantastic in basically saying that he sees himself as a Collingwood player, with the success of the place and the environment that we exist in [something] that he wouldn't want to give up.

"I think that's fantastic to hear and we really do believe that we create an environment that the players want to stay a part of.

"No club is going to be able to match the dollars that GWS or Gold Coast have been throwing around, but hopefully there is something more important than that and just as beneficial for the players in a solid club environment."

Buckley maintained media speculation on the future of the club's uncontracted stars had in no way shifted the players' focus from achieving more on-field success in 2011.

The Pies open their NAB Cup campaign against Richmond and Carlton at Etihad Stadium on Saturday night and have named a strong squad that includes 16 players from last year's premiership side.

Travis Cloke and Alan Didak, along with Maxwell and Swan, were notable absentees from the 32-man squad, but Buckley said all were following strictly-tailored programs that would see them available for round one of the premiership season at the latest.

Buckley has overseen the team's preparation for the opening round of the NAB Cup and will assume control in the coach's box on game day as part of Mick Malthouse's rotation policy.

While he has enjoyed the challenge, Buckley said he didn't see it as an opportunity to begin putting his stamp on the side before he takes over from Malthouse permanently at the end of the season.

"I'm just the flag bearer for one week," he said.

"I'm part of the 2011 program and obviously Mick runs that.

"This is part of what my role is within that program as it was last year. I'm opposition coach this year, but I've had the opportunity to run some meetings this week and will take the reins for match day, but ultimately the preparation for this game and the season-proper is a lot bigger than just one week."

With the Pies heavily favoured to win successive flags, the relationship between Malthouse and Buckley has been the subject of much conjecture ahead of the handover, but the former skipper said it was not an issue inside the club.

"We don't get caught up in media agendas. We've got plenty to focus on in-house," he said.

"Obviously there may be more speculation as you get toward the end of the year with 'D-day' getting closer, but ultimately everyone's focus at the club is about 2011.

"Mine, in particular, is to play my role as well as I possibly can."
