A week in the life of Ben Sinclair
This week, we find out what Ben Sinclair has been doing since the win over Geelong last Saturday.
This week it’s Ben Sinclair’s turn to tell us what he’s been up to since the final siren sounded on Collingwood’s 31-point win over Geelong on Saturday night.
Saturday - post match
I came back for my recovery and had a late dinner - pizza and a ham and cheese toasted sandwich. After that, I went home where I live with my mum and dad. I tried to get to sleep but it was very hard to nod off because my adrenaline’s up after the game, so I sat and watched TV. It was only Family Guy, nothing special.
Sunday
Came into the club for recovery at 9am and made sure I had no niggles and was in good shape. I did the recovery with some light weights and took a walk in the water and had a ride on the bikes. Afterwards I went in to see my mum in hospital. She’s just had a hip replacement, so I stayed there for a couple of hours with my brother (Will Slade, who played 17 games for Geelong between 2002 and 2006) and dad (Peter, who played senior football for Melbourne between 1969 and 1972). I went out with dad to Yum Cha and had some dumplings, which was very nice. We went for a walk and once I was home I had a two-hour snooze. It was a quiet night. We got take away Thai for dinner and I just stayed home with dad and watched TV.
Monday
We came in for training in the morning. Woke at about 7.15am and came in. I did a bit of touch with Tom Young, who I usually warm up with. Had my lunch here, which was lasagne plus a toasted sandwich, did a bit of physio and had a swim and spent some time in the ice baths. I went and saw mum again for a bit, then I grabbed a chai latte with Jackson Paine, which we do sometimes. Once that was done I did a bit of uni work. I’m doing a commerce course through the club. It’s something a bit different; I’m not sure where I want it to take me but it’s something to do outside the club. Keeffy, Johnny Mac (former teammate John McCarthy), Paul Stewart (a Port Adelaide teammate of McCarthy's) and Blairy and I meet once a month for it. When Johnny has his day off he sometimes comes down for it. I went home and did meditation, which I do most days, while most nights I go into the pool at home and go for a walk in the water. It’s freezing but good for my recovery. I went to bed and had an early night.
Tuesday
We went to the Sea Baths in St Kilda and did a little bit of touch and a few core exercises plus a walk in the water. I don't mind it, but if we have to swim, well, I dread that part. No one went out into the deep this morning. We also went into the warm salty spa, and then came back in here at the club where I had a massage before I went home. Mum’s arrived home from hospital. She can’t do much and has to rest so I stayed home with her until dad came home, then I went out and had some dinner with a couple of mates. They’re my old school friends who I like to catch up with and do something with them a couple of times a week if I can. Unfortunately, when I have free time, most are at uni, and vice versa. After that we went back to one of their places and watched 21 Jump Street, which was very good, I definitely enjoyed.
Wednesday
I came in for the day’s session. When I get here I get the physio done and have a meeting to look at our opposition with Rocket. Then we went out onto the training track doing various drills. At the end I did some work with the forwards and our forwards coach Matthew Lappin where we did some work on goal kicking, which was really enjoyable and helpful. I came back in, did some weights and had lunch (which was a chicken roll). Then I went through some touch out on sprung floor with Dale Tapping (Midfield Development Coach) and went home spent some time with mum. Dad cooked chicken schnitzel for dinner, and I went to bed very early, about 9.30pm.
Thursday
I slept in until about 10am because it was my day off. Then I came into the club and had a massage before grabbing some lunch with some mates from outside of the club. They’re also from school, but different from the ones I caught up with on Tuesday. I also had to go shopping to buy some shoes, because I’ve only got one pair of vans that are getting the job done at the moment but they're falling apart so need to get some more. I also watched The Footy Show and The Marngrook Footy Show, then just headed off to bed and took it easy.
Friday
It’s the day before the game so I’ll come in for a pre-game training session, get a massage and walk in the water. I’m going out for lunch with a few teammates. Where we go changes each week, but lately we’ve been to a few places on Chapel Street, especially one that does a good chicken focaccia. Once that’s done, I’ll just go home, relax, sit on the couch, watch some TV, go for a walk and get in water in the pool at home. Then I usually watch a movie with mum and dad. I usually do it because I like to do something instead of watching footy so I can take my mind off it. Then head to bed and be set for game day
Saturday - game day
I’ll get up and have breakfast (Weet Bix and baked beans on toast), go for a walk and then get in the water to wake me up. Then just relax for couple of hours, sleep for an hour or so then have a shower. I usually get to game about two hours before the start so I’m ready to go.
