The blistering form of Dayne Beams continues to propel him towards the top of the AFL Coaches Association Champion Player of the Year award, gaining the maximum 10 votes from Nathan Buckley and John Worsfold on the weekend.

Beams has now polled a total of 34 votes in his past four matches (at an average of 8.5) meaning he is now ranked second at the club on 46 votes. He is in eighth place on the leaderboard, 11 votes off overall leader Jobe Watson. Scott Pendlebury is the only Magpie to have polled more votes (55).

It’s a just reward for one of the most improved players in the competition. Beams’ 34 possessions (18 kicks, 16 handballs), three tackles and three goals made him the most influential player on the ground in the eyes of the two coaches and continues his nine-game purple patch.

Since Luke Ball’s season ended with a knee injury against Carlton in round three, Beams has thrived on the added midfield responsibility averaging 32.11 disposals. Only twice has he dipped below the 30-disposal mark and his tackle average hovers just below five per game.

It’s a marked improvement on his 2011 form that saw him average a very credible 22.81 possessions and importantly kick 21 goals.

Only two other Collingwood players received votes in the three-point win over West Coast. Travis Cloke polled six for his commanding five-goal performance while Dane Swan’s 38-disposal ubiquity couldn’t be overlooked, receiving two votes.

Eagle quartet Daniel Kerr (six), Luke Shuey (four), Shannon Hurn (one) and Beau Waters (one) rounded out this week’s voting.

Despite his two-week absence, Pendlebury continues to remain a contender to take out the award at season’s end. His 55 votes after 10 games sees him ranked equal second behind Watson, sharing the position with Matthew Boyd (Western Bulldogs) and Scott Thompson (Adelaide).
