Collingwood’s training oval at Olympic Park is now the home of Melbourne’s new and upgraded weather observation site.
The Olympic Park site will replace the current La Trobe Street weather station, which has been the Bureau’s official site in Melbourne since 1908.
“Data from the site will be used in the Bureau’s weather forecasting, and will keep residents and visitors to Melbourne informed about what is happening with the minute by minute changes to Melbourne weather,” Minister for the Environment Senator Simon Birmingham said.

“Significantly the new site will recognise wind speeds, enabling the Bureau to include the measures of apparent temperature, which explains not just the temperature, but how it feels. This is important for sporting events, both for athletes and spectators.”
The new oval opens for business.
The Olympic Park site will also become the official point to which ‘the forecast for Melbourne’ refers.
