Collingwood’s Steele Sidebottom and Dane Swan have been recognised for their roles in their side’s 40-point triumph over the GWS Giants as the Magpies leading contributors in the latest round of AFLCA Champion Player of the Year voting.
Sidebottom and Swan received six votes apiece from the competing coaches, their efforts playing a pivotal role in ensuring Collingwood overcame a spirited GWS side, which provided a glimpse into what may prove to be an orange hued future.
Indeed, the duo were ultimately overshadowed by a seven goal performance from Giants rising star Jeremy Cameron, who cemented his status as the leading emerging key forward in the AFL with a domineering display, showcasing his fast expanding arsenal in front of the second largest crowd in GWS history.
Unanimously adjudged best on ground by Nathan Buckley and Kevin Sheedy, Cameron consigned the Magpies to the minor votes, with Dayne Beams receiving four to join Sidebottom and Swan as the only Collingwood players recognised.
With 39 possessions and three goals, Swan affirmed his status as the AFL’s disposals leader as he maintained his surging late season form, while Sidebottom kicked three majors and took eight marks to accompany his 31 touches.
Beams meanwhile once again emphasised his worth to the Black and White, forcing Magpie fans to contemplate what might have been had he not found his season compromised by injury, his eight clearances and 37 disposals a clear demonstration of his strength at stoppages.
On the overall leaderboard, Sydney’s Kieran Jack narrowed the deficit to Gary Ablett to just five votes, as the Gold Coast superstar failed to poll in his side’s 43-point loss to Carlton.
Despite failing to feature among Collingwood’s best as determined by Buckley and Sheedy, Scott Pendlebury has retained his place in the competition’s top five as the home and away season approaches its final stanza.
