Collingwood vice-captain Scott Pendlebury's stellar season was recognised by his peers at the AFL Players Association's end-of-season ceremony on Tuesday night when he finished fourth in its 2013 MVP Award.

Pendlebury, 25, polled 321 votes to finish behind Hawthorn's Jarryd Roughead (third), Geelong's Joel Selwood (second) and Gold Coast captain Gary Ablett (first).

Incredibly, Pendlebury was still 1158 votes adrift of Ablett who polled a whopping 1479 votes to win his fifth Leigh Matthews Trophy.

Pendlebury's Collingwood teammate Dane Swan polled 137 votes to finish in ninth place.

Mature age rookie Sam Dwyer's remarkable debut season was recognised by his comrades, finishing fourth in the AFLPA's Best First Year Player Award.
