A message from the Collingwood board
The board members of the Collingwood Football Club have offered Eddie McGuire their full support to continue as President.
McGuire spoke with all members of the board, apart from Alisa Camplin who is overseas, following his comments on radio on Wednesday. He received their unqualified backing.
“I understand the questions surrounding my leadership but with the support of my fellow directors I remain committed to the Collingwood Football Club and all that it stands for.”
Vice President Jack Kennedy said that after discussions between members of the board and Eddie over the course of Wednesday and Thursday, the board overwhelming endorsed his continuing leadership of the board.
“While we accept that Eddie made a mistake that caused serious offence to Adam Goodes and many more, we balance this against the work Eddie and the board have done, and continue to do, to make Collingwood an institution in football and society that our entire ‘family’ can be proud of. One committed to fairness, equality and social justice,” Kennedy said.
“Eddie has led with distinction for almost 15 years and a hallmark of his time has been a commitment to positive change on and off the field, at Collingwood and beyond.
“He was central to the establishment of the Collingwood Foundation and the creation of the Victoria Park Community Centre, through which the club is involved with a range of community programs including indigenous employment.”
“Eddie has been a magnificent president of this club and his ongoing leadership is essential.”
