It’s been some sort of a rise for Tom Langdon.

The man who was overlooked by all 18 clubs in the 2012 National Draft was added to Collingwood’s senior list with the 65th selection in last year’s National Draft.

A mere 166 days later, the 19-year-old has featured in all 10 of Collingwood’s pre-season and home and away fixtures and claimed a Rising Star nomination in the process.

Langdon first marked himself as a player to watch with an assured performance across half back in the team’s only intra-club practice match of the pre-season on 1 February.

“I think young Tom Langdon at times displayed a bit, which was good,” Director of Football Rodney Eade later told collingwoodfc.com.au.

Teammate Jamie Elliott reiterated Eade’s comments.

“Tommy Langdon stood out. He did his job well playing on the wing.”

Langdon found himself starring under the Etihad Stadium lights just six weeks later when he was arguably Collingwood’s best in the disastrous loss to Fremantle in the season opener.

The 189cm backman recorded 11 rebound 50s – the equal third highest tally recorded by a Collingwood player since Champion Data began keeping records of the statistic in 1999.

His 24 disposals ranked second only to Jaxson Barham’s 28 against Brisbane in round four, 2009, as the most gathered in a Collingwood debut since 2000.

In the weeks since, he has not skipped a beat, winning 20 or more disposals in four of his seven games.

Importantly, he has taken 15 intercept marks for the season. Only five players in the entire competition have taken more.

Langdon is also ranked in the top 13 players in the league for rebound 50s so far this year (30), while his 47 marks (five contested) are the most of any Collingwood player.

Against Carlton, he was awarded the Richard Pratt Medal as best afield, and with 23 disposals, eight marks (two contested, three intercepted), four inside 50s and four rebounds, it was easy to see why.
