The Magpies turn 120
Collingwood celebrates its 120th birthday in 2012.
To mark the occasion, collingwoodfc.com.au will turn the spotlight on the key moments and figures that influenced the birth of the Magpies.
The Collingwood Football Club was officially created at a public meeting held at the Collingwood Town Hall on 12 February 1892. Legend has it that the people of Collingwood packed out the Town Hall to the point where patrons were forced to climb through the windows.
Local politician John Hancock formed the basis for Collingwood’s ambitious ethos when he declared “the very name of Collingwood would strike terror into the hearts of opposing players”.
Collingwood celebrated its centenary in 1992 and was the youngest of the VFL’s eight foundation clubs when it split from the VFA competition in 1896.
It has since gone on to win 15 VFL/AFL premierships, one VFA premiership and has won more matches (1443) than any other side.
In the lead up to Sunday's milestone, collingwoodfc.com.au will profile the important people, places and moments that led to the creation of the Collingwood Football Club.
