Each week throughout the season, collingwoodfc.com.au will post the top-five players ranked in the 'Collingwood Player of the Year' votes.
The Copeland Trophy is the most prestigious award on offer at the Collingwood Football Club, and at the conclusion of each season is awarded the best and fairest Magpie.
Round four review: Collingwood’s 17-point win against Brisbane at the Gabba produced several Magpie match winners. Midfielder Scott Pendlebury has continued his impressive play this season after collecting a career-high 35 possessions (18 kicks, 17 handballs, eight marks, six tackles). The superstar has maintained his stronghold on the ‘Copeland Watch’. Forward Paul Medhurst kicked a game-high four goals and has now moved into seventh in the overall player of the year standings.
Debutant Jaxson Barham was impressive with his 28 disposal performance playing on Brisbane’s Luke Power. His play earned him this week’s NAB AFL Rising Star nomination. Veteran defender Simon Prestigiacomo had a massive hand in shutting down Brisbane’s Daniel Bradshaw in the first quarter and then moved onto nullifying Jonathan Brown.

Now in his fourth season at the club, the 21-year-old is averaging a career-high 28.8 disposals a match. In last week’s win over Brisbane he gathered a game-high 35 possessions and used the ball with 77% efficiency. Pendlebury is relishing his leadership role within the club and should continue to produce big numbers for the rest of the season.
The 2008 Copeland Trophy winner has continued his good form from last season averaging a career-high in disposals (27.5) and marks (8) a match. He has improved on his disposal efficiency using the ball with 75.5% efficiency, 6.2% higher than last year. Swan has improved his numbers in contested possessions, averaging nine a game.
After stringing consecutive strong performances in the ruck, Fraser has moved into third position in the ‘Copeland Watch’. With the club electing to go with one recognised ruckman for the last three matches, Fraser has been forced to shoulder the majority of the ruck load. He has risen to the challenge averaging career-highs in disposals per game (20.8), hitouts (22.2) marks (7.5).
Forward Leon Davis had a wonderful game last week using the ball with 87% efficiency from 23 disposals. His defensive work in the off season looks to have paid dividends after averaging five tackles (career-highs) in his first two matches. If he keeps up his consistent play he should feature in the top five for the majority of the season.
The forward is enjoying playing senior football again after missing the latter part of last season due to a club imposed suspension. He shined in the round two win over Melbourne collecting 29 disposals, ten marks and three goals. If he continues to produce these kind of numbers, the 2006 Copeland Trophy winner could add more hardware to his resume by season’s end. |
