Here's a stat that underlines Travis Cloke's importance to the Collingwood machine.

The powerful forward kicked 39.28 per cent of Collingwood's last 28 goals against Hawthorn.

In its last two matches against the Hawks (last year's Qualifying Final and round three this season), Collingwood has conceded 20 or more goals but has still been within four straight kicks at the final change.

Much of this can be put down to Cloke's work at full forward.

In both matches he has taken control of Hawthorn's Ryan Schoenmakers and provided the Magpies will a pillar of strength deep inside 50.

Watch Cloke kick a team-high five goals against Hawthorn on Sunday.

On Sunday, Cloke bagged all five goals in the first three quarters and suffered badly from a lack of supply in the final quarter when Hawthorn doubled Collingwood's inside 50s (16 to eight).

He handled the greasy Sherrin with far greater surety than the majority of the players on the field. In the first half, when the rain was at its most heaviest, Cloke took six marks (two contested), second only to Hawthorn's Ben Stratton with seven.

He kicked two early behinds from the right forward pocket at the City End before finding his groove just before quarter time with a goal from the other side of the ground.

Cloke then kicked two goals in each of the next two quarters, keeping Collingwood afloat as Hawthorn threatened to run away with the match.

He could only manage three possessions in the final quarter when the Hawks began to do as they pleased out of the centre.

Cloke's 27 goals from 15 matches against the Hawks is his equal second-highest tally against any club (he has 27 from 13 games against Sydney).

Hawthorn is one of two clubs that have had the advantage over Collingwood in the head-to-head stakes during Cloke's career (Geelong is the other club), having won nine of the 15 meetings.

Interestingly, Cloke scored his first Brownlow vote in a win against Hawthorn in round 17, 2006, when he had 22 disposals and kicked two goals in Collingwood's 45-point win.
