Greater Western Sydney is keen to be part of Friday night football from next season, with the club set to ask the AFL for a game in the sought-after timeslot.

The Giants believe a crosstown derby against Sydney would maximise interest in the game, although League powerhouse Collingwood could also be involved to help boost TV ratings and crowd attendance.

Giants CEO Dave Matthews said the Magpies had a major role to play in his club's quest to feature on Friday night.

"I'd love to see Collingwood help us develop a major event in Sydney – a Friday night game," Matthews told Fairfax. 

"Collingwood gives us insurance on the overall interest of the game because we're a young club, it's our fourth season."

The Giants are yet to play a match on Friday night, although the steady improvement of the young club in 2015 could assist it in its lobbying of the AFL.

A win over the Magpies this Sunday afternoon at the MCG also wouldn't hurt the GWS cause. 

The league said the Giants' proposal would be examined in the latter half of this season.

"We'll assess once the season is closer to the end. If they perform at a level that sees them in finals or deep they'll be closer to Friday night," AFL General Manager of Broadcasting, Scheduling and Major Projects Simon Lethlean said.
