Collingwood has been in possession of the fifth selection in a National Draft twice in the past 10 years.

As luck would have it, the two players chosen with that selection, Scott Pendlebury (2005) and Jordan De Goey (2014) have already linked up, with the captain teaching the new young gun the ropes on the training track.

“The player I’ve probably spent the most time with would be Scott Pendlebury,” De Goey told CollingwoodTV.

“He brought me into the club really early and we did a running session in the altitude room, just to get an understanding of what’s required of me and he sort of gave me the ins and outs, which was really good.”

Pendlebury, now entering his second year as captain, has continued to leave a mark on his teenaged teammate, as De Goey explains.

“Pendles is also really good out on the ground, just the way he gives you direct feedback.

“At the time it can be really direct and straight at you, which I probably prefer as a player, but after that, if he’s hot headed or something like that, he’ll come to me and explain what he meant by it and how he can improve next time.”

Although he was considered to be among the very best junior footballers in the country last year, De Goey is entering his first season on an AFL list with eyes wide open.

There’s no talk of NAB Challenge berth, let alone a trip to the Gabba to take on Brisbane in round one.

“My goal for this year is to act as a sponge and learn as much as I can off these older players,” De Goey said.

“I think if you start thinking about the games and the NAB Cup (Challenge) it could affect your performance, so my focus is on trying to improve as a player and different aspects of my game.”
