In front of 88,960, the Magpies overcame a six-point deficit at the main break and kicked eight goals to three in the second half to book a place in the grand final. Paul Licuria was superb with 24 disposals, nine marks and five tackles. Skipper Nathan Buckley displayed a wonderful defensive effort with 10 tackles.

With most pundits backing the home side, Collingwood used a seven-goal third quarter to propel the side into another week in September. Midfielder Dane Swan was best on ground with 27 disposals and two goals. Forwards John Anthony and Chris Dawes kicked three each while Nick Maxwell played a shutdown role on Scott Thompson.
