They live, breath, eat and sleep football. So when the chance comes to take their mind off the game, AFL players have a wide variety of interesting hobbies.
For Adam Treloar, it’s basketball.
Ask the recruit about the game and he’ll talk for hours. Ask him about the Oklahoma City Thunder and he’ll probably talk for days.
It’s hard to find a more committed player to the intense AFL lifestyle than Treloar. Yet after last weekend’s loss to Carlton, the midfielder said he found solace in a quiet day in front of the TV.
“Obviously it’s not ideal at the moment because we’re not winning…
“Being in Melbourne, everyone talks about footy. So for me, yesterday I watched Oklahoma play,” Treloar told co-host Mark Allen on Collingwood Media’s vodcast ‘Sports Galore’.
“I’m passionate about my boys,” he continued.
“When it’s on the line, I’m more passionate than anyone would imagine.”
As it so often does on 'Sports Galore', conversation quickly turned to Treloar’s passion for basketball.
However in the 15-minute podcast, the pair also manage to discuss Leicester City’s English Premier League victory and some of the other biggest underdog stories in sport.
Below are five moments to listen out for in episode six of ‘Sports Galore’...
Don’t touch our Sherrins
Early in the week, The Age newspaper reported that a new type of football was being created by Sherrin to assist the goalkicking of established and emerging AFL footballers.
When quizzed on the new ball, Treloar was unconvinced.
“I think it’s silly. Just stick with the Sherrins. The game is changing enough as it is. We don’t need to change the footballs.”
Struggling team needs a star
Bred in the Eastern Football League with local powerhouse Noble Park, Treloar still has a keen interest in grassroots football.
So when he hears the story of struggling division four EFL side Nunawading, he has a word of advice.
Listen to hear the three former AFL stars Treloar thinks could help Nunawading claw its way back from an average losing margin this year of 262 points.
Former Lion a Nunawading Lion? Adam Treloar has called on past AFL greats to help a struggling local team get their first win of the season.
‘43 and still going strong’
On the Leicester theme, the Subway player of the week was awarded to Australian soccer star Mark Schwarzer.
The man who has now won back-to-back EPL titles was praised by Allen and Treloar, before the pair speculated about a potential move back to the A-League.
Treloar’s first iconic sports memory
No one would forget the first moment they have been truly blown away by a sporting feat.
For Allen, it was hearing ‘Land Down Under’ blare over the speakers after Australia defied all odds to win the America’s Cup in 1983.
Treloar has a different first memory. But in tying in to the theme of the week, it remains one of the most famous underdog stories in sport.
You wouldn’t believe it…
Only the introduction of a sports story relating to South Korea could make the most bizarre segment on the show even more unbelievable.
Treloar comes prepared with a story involving blind athletes, replica stadiums and gold medals that seems impossible to be true.
His co-host refuses to believe it’s true. What’s your verdict?
