For 49 minutes, Dane Swan sat in silence as he joined family members, Collingwood staff and members of the media at an advanced screening of documentary ‘Last Call’.
When the credits rolled and the lights came on, the now-retired Swan had nothing but praise for the feature documenting his final season in the Black and White.
“It was done really well. Brayden (director Brayden Cocks) and the footy club did an amazing job,” Swan told Channel 7 outside the Glasshouse theatre.
“It’s good to have something… that people can look at.
“My little cousins who are young can look at it one day and sort of know what I was about and a bit about my last year.”
Swan watched on with his mum Deidre, who also plays a starring role in the film.
“It was probably never on the agenda in my mind that Dane would play AFL football,” Deidre says in the documentary as she sits alongside husband and former Williamstown champion Bill Swan.
“They had these things at school where they said what you’d be suited for and they said Dane would be a good funeral director,” she recalls with a laugh.
"I just panicked" - Dane Swan's partner Taylor Wilson describes the moment she found about Swan's career-ending injury.
‘Last Call’ will be available for public viewing at 7pm on Thursday evening.
The feature tracks Swan as he recovers from surgery on a broken foot and contemplates whether to make the life-changing decision to retire from AFL football.
The subject of hundreds of headlines and stories good and bad throughout his storied career today described the documentary as an accurate representation of the true Dane Swan.
“That was me. That was honest and it was exactly how I was feeling at the time,” he said.
“Hopefully people can get a better understanding of me and what I went through this year.”
