COLLINGWOOD defender Heath Shaw says Saturday night's stunning come-from-behind win over Adelaide at the MCG was the sweetest victory of his career so far.

Shaw, who was brilliant against the Crows, reflected on Collingwood's epic win at Lexus Centre on Sunday morning.

"A couple of years back against West Coast in that extra time final it was a similar comparison," he said.

"But I think last night topped it with our backs against the wall … to come back the way we did showed a lot of character in the group."

Shaw said the turnaround happened after the side took more risks in the second half.

"Once you get the ball in quickly, we found it easier to score and that was a big turning point for us."

The rebounding backman praised the efforts of young Magpie Brent Macaffer, who returned to the side.

"Caff came in out of the wilderness a bit and he played his role for the team and did really well for us," Shaw said.

As for his thoughts on John Anthony's match-winning goal, Shaw conceded he was nervous, although confident, the key forward would kick truly.

"If you want anyone to have the ball having a set shot, I think it was him," he said.

"He's been a great player for us this year and he's been a really good find and it was just a good situation for Jack to be in.

"We had the most confidence in him and when he kicked the goal, I didn't know whether to tap him in the back or just get everyone in the backline. It was a weird situation there."

Shaw said Anthony, who was in tears following his match-winner, is a player who shows his passion.

"He wears his heart on his sleeve. It was a big goal in a big game and he got his side into a preliminary final, so he was pretty emotion," he said.

"A few of the boys have given him a little bit of stick about it this morning, but you love to see that stuff from any player."

He added president Eddie McGuire was also a little hoarse after relishing such an occasion.

"He was pretty excited. I tried to talk to him after the game and his throat was gone. I don't know how he's going to go on radio tomorrow," Shaw said.

"He was pretty emotional – everyone was."
